Abstract: OCEAN CITIZEN, part of the Mission Ocean & Waters endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, aims to regenerate marine forests through a multidisciplinary approach integrating science and society. Effective communication has been vital during its initial 18 months. The project employs storytelling centered around ecological succession parallel to the project evolution to engage diverse audiences and bridge the gap between science and society. This strategy involves selecting key moments and messages aligned with communication goals, and utilizing various internal and external channels strategically. Lessons learned stress strategic planning, tailored internal communication, diverse tools like comics, sustained engagement, and leveraging partnerships for credibility and resource optimisation. Like in ecological succession, we are currently in the colonising stage of our communication efforts, laying the groundwork for the forthcoming steps in our mission to create a “vibrant” community of citizens that understands the significance of the ocean, the challenges in conservation and actions for restoration.
Contribution: Shared communications strategy, storytelling approach, through the ecological succession central theme.
