Nice, France
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) will take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025. Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the conference will focus on the theme: “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”
The Conference will feature an opening segment, ten plenary sessions, ten Ocean Action Panels, and a closing segment. It aims to drive urgent action to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development while exploring innovative pathways to advance the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14. Key outcomes will include the adoption, by consensus, of the Nice Ocean Action Plan—a concise, action-oriented declaration and a list of voluntary commitments.
Bringing together governments, the United Nations system, intergovernmental organizations, international financial institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations, academia, the private sector, philanthropic organizations, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities, the Conference will provide a platform to assess challenges, share opportunities, and advance partnerships for ocean conservation and sustainability.
Preparations for the event will include a one- to two-day preparatory meeting convened by the President of the UN General Assembly in July 2024 at UN Headquarters in New York. Additionally, Costa Rica hosted a High-Level Event on Ocean Action titled “Immersed in Change” from June 7 to 8, last year, in San Jose to contribute to the Conference and its outcomes.
Stay tuned for more updates on this critical milestone for ocean conservation and sustainable development!
