Blue Carbon

Blue Carbon

Is the carbon captured by the world’s ocean and coastal ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrass meadows sequester and store more carbon per unit area than terrestrial forests. They are now being recognised for their role in mitigating climate change. The BC concept was introduced as a metaphor aimed at highlighting that coastal ecosystems, in addition to terrestrial forests (coined as green carbon), contribute significantly to organic carbon (C) sequestration.
