According to the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), Citizen science is an ‘umbrella’ term that describes various ways the public participates in science. There are two key features of citizen science: (1) the active involvement of citizens in research with scientists or professionals, and (2) a tangible outcome, such as new scientific knowledge, conservation action, or policy change.
