Marine Forest (MF)

Marine Forest (MF)
  • MF are marine habitats composed of benthic macroalgae, phanerogams and suspension feeders (sponges, corals, gorgonians, etc.) that form three-dimensional living structures highly necessary to maintain marine biodiversity and marine ecosystem functions and services
  • Marine Animal Forests (MAF): These are a type of MF that are 3D biotic assemblages mainly composed of suspension feeding organisms such as sponges, gorgonians, hard corals, bryozoans, bivalves, etc., that form canopies like the trees or shrubs on land, thus creating underwater forests and providing valuable ecosystem services.
