Dear reader,

On behalf of the entire OCEAN CITIZEN consortium, I am pleased to welcome you to the project’s second newsletter.

During the last four months, the partners of the OCEAN CITIZEN project had a wonderful time working together as a group and launching new tasks and activities.

In this newsletter, you will discover our new partner, INNOCEANA, joining our great OCEAN CITIZEN adventure. We’ll also cover our second campaign on the beautiful island of Tenerife, my visit to the Science Summit at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and the presentation of the OCEAN CITIZEN initiative at different events across the globe.

INNOCEANA AS A POSSIBLE NEW PARTNER FOR THE OCEAN CITIZEN PROJECT!

We are delighted to explore the possibility of INNOCEANA joining our esteemed OCEAN CITIZEN project. INNOCEANA could contribute valuable expertise in communication and project management, thereby enhancing the consortium’s knowledge to achieve even better results.

INNOCEANA is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the ocean for future generations. The main objective of INNOCEANA is to reduce the impact of numerous threats related to pollution, climate change, and overfishing. To meet these challenges, INNOCEANA has developed a holistic approach to conservation that combines innovation, education, research, and collaboration. INNOCEANA has been working on a wide range of projects across the globe.

OCEAN CITIZEN’S SECOND CAMPAIGN IN TENERIFE

The OCEAN CITIZEN project set sail on a crucial mission to the beautiful Tenerife. From the 6th to the 21st of September 2023. Several teams from our European partners came together to launch the project’s second campaign in the island to explore the underwater ecosystem of Tenerife’s coastal waters.

OCEAN CITIZEN NETWORKING & SYNERGIES

Dr. Sergio Rossi was  part of the European Union delegation that attended the Science Summit at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which took place last September. Invited by the COST Association, the event showcased the "MAF World" COST Action and the OCEAN CITIZEN project, which aimed at addressing  ocean challenges.

OCEAN CITIZEN AT THE XXXII CONFERENCE OF THE ITALIAN SOCIETY OF ECOLOGY

Federica Costantini, from CoNISMa, showcased OCEAN CITIZEN during the presentation "From population genomic connectivity to restoration of marine animal forests". Lorenzo Bramanti, Martina de la Torre and Sergio Rossi were also involved in the research.

ATLANTIC & ARCTIC WEEKLY HOUR WITH OCEAN CITIZEN

Marc García-Durán, from UGI, introduced the OCEAN CITIZEN project during an online session of the Atlantic & Arctic basin Lighthouse from BlueMission AA. Laura  Busquier and Sergio Rossi also participated in this wonderful event.

NEXT EVENTS: FIRST ANNUAL MEETING IS AROUND THE CORNER!

From December 13th to 15th, all partners of the Ocean Citizen will convene in Lecce, Italy, to present and discuss the progress and developments of the project. It will be an excellent opportunity for the partners to exchange ideas and experiences.

OCEAN CITIZEN SUPPORTS CORAL CONSERVATION

Ocean Citizen is proud to support the "Life is Better in Colour" social media campaign, organised by the ICRI in partnership with the Coral Reef Alliance. For the month of November, we are “bleaching” our logo in solidarity with coral reef conservation and in support of Coral Bleaching Awareness month.
